Magnetic dip and other errors inherent to compass turns are mostly the result of the construction of the instrument itself. These errors are the reason a directional gyroscope (DG) is used in conjunction with a mag compass in most aircraft. The DG must be periodically matched with the compass during flight due to precession of the gyro. The DG needs to be matched with the compass only during straight-and-level, unaccelerated flight. Otherwise, the errors inherent to the compass during changes in heading and attitude will result in an inaccurate setting on the DG and the inability of the pilot to maintain the proper heading. |
