4). What should be the first action after starting an aircraft engine?

a). Adjust for proper RPM and check for desired indications on the engine gauges.
b). Test each brake and the parking brake.
c). Place the magneto or ignition switch momentarily in the OFF position to check for proper grounding.
The answer is:
a). Adjust for proper RPM and check for desired indications on the engine gauges.

Engine start-ups, whether in an airplane, a car, a lawnmower, or any internal combustion engine, are probably the time when the engine components are subject to the most abuse. The components are activated before the engine oil has fully circulated out of the sump and onto the moving parts. The engine is cold and that further inhibits good oil flow. So we should take extra special care during engine start to make sure we don't stress the components any more than is necessary.

We can do that by not allowing excessively high RPMs immediately after engine start. RPM should be adjusted to recommended idle as soon after start as possible and the engine guages (especially oil pressure) should be checked at once for proper indications.
