There are many choices avaiable to pilots when it comes to obtaning weather information. DUATS, self-briefing, televised weather broadcasts, NOAA, etc. All of these methods are useful but the most current weather information for a given flight should be obtained from the Automated Flight Service Station (AFSS) [1-800-WX-BRIEF]. Once a government entity, AFSS duties are now farmed out to contractors, but the information obtainable is just as thorough. |
While it is recommended that pilots should make it a practice to decipher TAFs and METARs and perform a self-briefing prior to contacting the AFSS, the specialist at the AFSS will walk the pilot through just about every weather consideration effecting a given route of flight. Also obtainable from the AFSS are NOTAMs and, upon request, the briefer will inform the pilot of the most recent temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) issued for the area, resulting in not only a more informed pilot and a safer operation, but also a record of the fact that the pilot received this information (in case of an unforeseen occurrence during the flight). |
